Root canal treatment is common in dentistry. During this procedure, the infected nerve is removed and the canal space is disinfected and filled. Not all root canal treatment lead to tooth discoloring. But it can happen due to multiple factors. Below is an example.
The image shows a lower front tooth that was injured in a small accident. The trauma damaged the nerve tissue. In this case, the tooth might have became discolored with or without the root canal treatment. The patient received root canal treatment. Tooth got darker. Patient wanted her white tooth back. Patient then received 2- 3 times of internal bleaching. However, the discoloration did not go away. (Internal bleaching is great but unfortunately it did not help much in her case.)
This is when I met the patient. Listening to her story, I decided not to do internal bleaching again since she did not want to give it another try. The next solution is masking the tooth with restoration. This can be done with composite filing, veneers, or crowns. Dentist will recommend what is best for the specific case.
During treatment plan discussion, patient requested the most conservative and lowest cost option. So I did a quick and simple "veneer" filling to mask the discoloration. Patient was happy with the outcome.
Ideally, a lab made veneer would be more esthetic but the patient needed some time to save up more money. And that is okay. As long as the patient is happy.
